The Mint Julep is an iconic bourbon cocktail created in the south during the 18th century. The mint julep was originally prescribed and appears in literature as early as 1784 “sickness at the stomach, with frequent retching, and, at times, the difficulty of swallowing. People are most familiar with it now being the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby. Therefore, it’s an almost must that you choose a Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey to bring it all together. You can’t go wrong with either Woodford Reserve, Eagle Rare or, perhaps, Basil Hayden.
- 2.5 oz Bourbon Whiskey
- Two sugars cubes or .5 oz simple syrup
- 4-5 mint sprig leaves
- Garnish: Mint Sprig
Typically using a silver Julep cup, muddle the mint and syrup. Add the bourbon and some crushed ice. Stir the cup into frosted on the outside. Top it off with more crushed ice and then garnish with a mint sprig.
